CAPE TOWN – PRETORIA (or reverse) 2 nights
For many visitors to South Africa, there's no finer way to see the country than on the popular weekly journeys between Pretoria and Cape Town. One of the world's top destinations, Cape Town offers a blend of cosmopolitan city life, mountain splendour and scenic Cape Winelands. From the coast, the 1600 kilometre route follows an old pioneering trail carved out of the African bushveld, passing through the winelands and climbing up to the interior through the Hex River Valley. Highlights of the north and southbound routes include visits to the historic village of Matjiesfontein, a 100-year-old refreshment stop in the arid Karoo, and Kimberley (city of De Beers), the diamond boom-town that's home to the Big Hole, the world's largest man-made excavation.
CAPE TOWN – GEORGE (or reverse) 1 night
The 550-kilometre rail journey between Cape Town and George, and then on to Knysna, a coastal jewel in the heart of the famous Garden Route, is rated one of the most beautiful in the world. From the Cape, you travel through mountains and vineyards, rolling wheatfields and racehorse stud farms. Stop to sample the famous wines of the district before continuing to the coast and the picturesque town of George, where Rovos Rail guests have the option of boarding the world famous steam train, The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe for a spectacular 67-kilometre journey through lakes and fens to the lagoon-side town of Knysna. This nature-lovers' paradise is a mecca for visitors drawn to the town for its natural beauty, abundant bird life and numerous sporting and recreational activities.
PRETORIA – DURBAN (or reverse) 2 nights
Departing Pretoria, meander down the dramatic Drakensberg escarpment (part of the Great African Rift Valley) to the picturesque lowveld. Transfer to the world famous Kruger National Park for the thrill of an open vehicle game drive in search of the elusive Big 5. The train continues on through beautiful Swaziland, where another exciting game drive may be enjoyed in Mkhaya Game Reserve. Your next stop is Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve (South Africa’s oldest reserve) for another superb game experience, before continuing to Durban, the vibrant heart of Zululand.
PRETORIA – VICTORIA FALLS (or reverse) 2 nights
Take an unforgettable journey from Pretoria, north across the Tropic of Capricorn to the Soutpansberg mountains. Here you enter Baobab country. Few sights are more evocative of primeval Africa than the silhouette of a Baobab tree starkly outlined against an African sunset. South African border formalities will take place at Messina and then, very slowly over Beit Bridge, the train will ease itself into Zimbabwe. Time permitting you stop at the interesting Museum of Natural History in Bulawayo. The train then continues through Hwange Game Reserve to journeys end, the incomparable Victoria Falls on the mighty Zambezi River.
CAPE TOWN – DAR ES SALAAM (or reverse) 12 nights
This annual 13-day trans-African safari carries its exclusive band of intrepid travellers through the heartlands of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania to the lush and exotic East Coast, on what is destined to become one of the most famous train journeys in the world. GOLF SAFARI 8 nights
A selection of the finest courses in South Africa are brought together in a kaleidoscope of golf and scenic beauty. Rovos Rail has designed a delightful nine-day Golf Safari to entertain the most discerning player. At all venues, there are optional excursions for the entertainment of non-playing guests. This special journey commences in Pretoria and is a pleasure for both the golfer and the non-golfer. Golfers will play at Leopard's Creek, tee off at the Royal Swazi Golf Club, at one of South Africa's finest courses, the Durban Beachwood Country Club and at the Champagne Sports Resort in the foothills of the imposing Drakensberg Mountains.
