Best of Zambia

(12 nights/13 days)

This safari combines the wonders of the South Luangwa National Park with the magnificent Zambezi River and the wildlife that gathers on it's banks in the Lower Zambezi National Park as well as the wondrous Victoria Falls.

Days 1 - 2 South Luangwa National Park

Your international flight arrives into Lusaka, and from here you take a connecting flight to Mfuwe. At Mfuwe you are met by our representative who transfers you by road to the South Luangwa National Park. You start your Zambian Safari from the comfort of Kapani Lodge, and spend the first couple of days exploring the main Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa by open 4-wheel drive vehicle. This area has high concentrations of game which is well acclimatised to the vehicles allowing us to get very close views.

Days 3 - 7 South Luangwa Walking Safaris
After breakfast on Day 3 you transfer to one of our Bushcamps situated in remote areas of the Park. The next 5 nights will be split between 3 of our 4 bushcamps. Here most of your gameviewing will be on foot, when you instantly become part of your surroundings. Zambia's Luangwa Valley is regarded as the home of walking safaris, and our walking safari guides are trained both as armed escorts and naturalist guides, which means that the emphasis is on getting up close and personal to big game.

Our four bushcamps are positioned such that we can offer a trail combining any number of the camps. Your safari will take on an expeditionary feel as you walk from one camp to the next. We have camps both on the Luwi River (one of the Luangwa's primary tributaries) and on the Luangwa itself. Your guides will point out the significance of the changing habitats as you walk through the Valley enjoying a complete safari experience.

Days 8 - 10 Lower Zambezi National Park

You depart South Luangwa on Day 8 and fly from Mfuwe to the Lower Zambezi National Park. As one of Zambia's newest national parks, the Lower Zambezi is relatively undeveloped and remains in a pristine wilderness state. The park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, and this magnificent wildlife sanctuary is simply spectacular. Here you are likely to see elephants, lions leopards, zebra, buck, buffalo and plenty of hippos, crocodiles and birds.

You stay for 3 nights in Sausagetree Camp, Chiawa Camp or Chongwe River Camp. All three camps are located on the banks of the great Zambezi River; all offer a superb standard of service and wildlife experience. Gameviewing activities are arranged to suit your preference. Explore the bush in open 4x4 vehicles, enjoy the excitement of a walking safari, or explore the Zambezi and its tributaries in a motor boat. The Lower Zambezi National Park is renowned for its canoe safaris - an unobtrusive and exhilarating way to encounter big game.

Days 11 - 12 Victoria Falls

After a relaxed breakfast on Day 11 you fly from Lower Zambezi to Livingstone. From here you are transferred to Tongabezi Lodge, upstream of the Victoria Falls. This luxurious river lodge is a wonderful base from which to explore the Falls, and perhaps enjoy some of the many adrenalin activities on offer in the area or simply take it easy in the peaceful environs of the camp. Activities offered at the lodge include guided canoe safaris, sunset cruises, guided walks to explore the Victoria Falls, visit the local markets and schools, and fishing on the great Zambezi River.

Norman always maintained that to view the bush from a vehicle was to observe, but to get out on foot was to become instantly a part of your surroundings. Anyone experiencing a walking safari will concur that to stand and see the flick of a lion's tail as he disappears behind a bush 100 yards away, incensed and mystified by your presence, is infinitely more exciting than to sit in the safety of a jeep within inches of the same creature.

Zambia's Luangwa Valley is regarded as the home of walking safaris. In recent years many private reserves and National Parks across Africa have caught on to the trend but nowhere yet comes close. The level of training required before qualifying as a walking guide and the concept of an armed escort as well as the naturalist guide leading each walk, mean that the emphasis in the Luangwa is on getting up close and personal to big game.
