The Quirimbas Archipelago

Quirimbas

The captivating, malaria-free desert islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago are strung along the coast from Pemba in the south to Palma in the north. With lush vegetation and mangrove swamps, the Quirimbas islands are feeding and nesting grounds for sea turtles, dugong, and support a large variety of wading birds, terns, dolphins, sharks and whales.

The Quirimbas have a fascinating history, with a combination of Arabian, Portuguese and African influences. Best known is Ibo Island, with opulent architecture, old fortresses and a dark history of slavery, pirates and ivory trading. Querimba Island, to the south of Ibo, offers mangroves, corals, palms and white sandy beaches.

The Quirimbas are an unspoilt tropical island paradise, with white beaches and turquoise waters, superb water sports, SCUBA diving, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, canoeing and sailing. Accommodation is offered in Pemba and on the islands in intimate and luxurious hotels.
