Money

The South African currency is the rand (ZAR) which is divided into one hundred cents. Notes are in denominations of R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10, and coins are in denominations of R5, R2, R1 and 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c.

MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted. American Express is accepted is honoured by most restaurants, hotels and larger retailers. Petrol stations do NOT accept credit cards – you will need to pay cash for your petrol.
Please be aware of credit card theft and scams – don’t let your cards out of your sight!


Banking

Banks are open Monday to Friday:  09:00 – 15:30
Saturday opening hours:   08:30 – 11:00.

Most banks will change travelers cheques, but commissions charged varies considerably between the banks. American Express is represented in South Africa by Nedbank, Thomas Cook by Rennies Travel and Visa by First National Bank (FNB).

You can withdraw cash (ZAR) from ATM machines if your card has the Cirrus logo.
