Hlane Royal National Park

Hlane means "wilderness" and is the Kingdom of Swaziland's largest protected area - held in trust for the nation by His Majesty King Mswati III. It is an immense flat lowland, dominated by ancient hardwood trees, including leadwood, tambuti and knobthorn. Hlane is home to large herds of game, including zebra, impala and wildebeest, as well as elephant and white rhino, and predators including lion, cheetah and leopard.

Hlane is particularly noted for is many raptors including longcrested eagles, martial eagles and bateleurs. Several species of vultures can also be found, including whitebacked, whiteheaded, lappetfaced and the occasional Cape vulture.

The park has no luxury private lodges, but offers a more "authentic" bush experience with self catering camps. A network of self-drive game-viewing roads criss-cross the park's flat terrain, weaving between the 1000 year old hardwood vegetation and shallow pans which attract great herds of animals during the dry winter months. Guided walking safaris, mountain biking and game drives in Hlane's open LandRovers are also available.
