Money

The unit of currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling. The largest denomination note is Tsh.10,000, followed by Tsh.5,000; Tsh.1,000; Tsh.500; Tsh.200 and Tsh.100. Coins are Tsh.100; 50; 20; 10; 5 and 1. Tanzanian Shillings can be obtained at banks and forex bureaus in all main towns and at the airports.

International visitors should bring US dollars in cash as well as traveller’s cheques. VISA and MASTERCARD are accepted by most hotels and lodges, but not in many of the local shops.


Banking

Banks are open Monday to Friday: 08:00 – 12:30 (16:30 in larger branches in the main towns); Saturdays: 08:30 – 13:30.
