Kruger Private Reserves

The private game reserves, most of which are found along the western border of the Kruger National Park offer prime game viewing in one of Africa's most spectacular animal kingdoms. A selection of luxury safari camps and lodges located within the private reserves provide a fully inclusive, and exceptional wildlife safari experience.

Your stay includes luxury accommodation, three meals each day and two game viewing activities daily. Usually your daily itinerary will entail an early morning game drive or walk (for about 3 hours) followed by a relaxed brunch back at the lodge. Relax at the lodge during the heat of the day before afternoon tea and your second game drive. Again, this usually lasts about 3 hours, but may be longer if you have good game sightings.

Sundowners in the bush are a highlight of the evening game drive. Dinner is served upon your return to the lodge - either in the lodge's restaurant, or open boma. As most lodges and camps accommodate only small numbers of guests, your safari experience is intimate and the attention to detail will ensure your stay is memorable.

A safari in any of the Kruger Private Reserves will include:

  • Opportunities to see the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, Cape buffalo)
  • Game drives conducted in open 4x4 vehicles, with armed trackers and rangers. You drive off-road, and follow game deep into the African bush.
  • Evening and night drives, using large spotlights to track and view nocturnal inhabitants of the reserve.
  • Walking safaris, allowing you to get "up close and personal" with the African wildlife, and discover some of the fascinating secrets of the plants and smaller animals of the bush.
  • The experienced trackers and rangers who accompany you are, in most cases, local to the area. They will share many secrets of the bush with you, enhancing your safari experience immeasurably.
Sabi Sand Game Reserve

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve borders the Kruger National Park, and with no fences separating these two world famous wildlife sanctuaries, the animals wander freely. Sabi Sand is renowned for its leopard population, and offers superb Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) game viewing. Two major rivers run through Sabi Sand - namely the Sabi River and the Sand River, sustaining a dense and diverse wildlife population. Some of South Africa's most exclusive private game lodges are found here, accessed ether by vehicle, or by light aircraft. A Sabi Sand Safari is without doubt, a highlight of any visit to Southern Africa.

Thornybush Game Reserve

Extending over 11,500 hectares of pristine African bushveld, Thornybush Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park and offers prime game-viewing, including the "Big Five". The Reserve has a small selection of luxurious and exclusive private game lodges

Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama is situated to the west of the Kruger National Park, close to Thornybush and Timbavati. The reserve is easily accessible from Hoedspruit Airport, with direct flights from Johannesburg.

Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

Klaserie borders Timbavati and Thornybush, and is drier and hotter than the more southerly private reserves. The bush is more sparse, although after summer rains it is green and lush. Game viewing is good here, although concentrations are not as great as in the reserves further south.

Manyeleti Private Game Reserve

Manyeleti borders the Kruger National Park, and there are no fences between these two wildlife sanctuaries. It is located immediately to the north of Sabi Sand, and is hotter and drier than the reserves to the south. Game viewing is often best around waterholes.

Mala Mala

Mala Mala in South Africa is a prime wildlife destination, and forms part of the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger Park.

Timbavati

This game reserve borders Kruger National Park, and the animals roam freely as there are no fences to restrict them. Some excellent private game lodges can be found in this hot lowveld area of wood and grassland.

Pafuri

Pafuri is a 20-room luxury tented lodge overlooking the Luvuvhu River. It is uniquely located in the extreme north of the Kruger National Park - wild, remote and scenically spectacular, and quite unlike any of the other private lodge locations. The region is considered one of Kruger's biodiversity hotspots, with some of the largest herds of elephant and buffalo, leopard and lion and incredibly prolific birdlife.
