Lower Zambezi National Park

Elephants, Lower Zambezi

Lower Zambezi is one of Zambia's newest national parks, and as such is relatively undeveloped. It’s beauty lies in it’s absolute wilderness state, and whilst the diversity of animals is not as wide as some of the other parks, the opportunities to get close to game wandering through the Zambezi channels are spectacular. The Park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the river is a massive wildlife sanctuary.

The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4,092 km², but most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. An escarpment along the northern end acts as a physical barrier to most of the parks animal species. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the rivers edge. The river is wide and slow, and the area teems with wildlife. On a Lower Zambezi safari you are likely to encounter elephants, lions, Cape buffalo, leopards, impala, waterbuck, zebra, and plenty of hippos, crocodiles and birds, including fish eagles.

This outstanding game reserve offers a wonderful combination of game drives, boating activities (canoeing is a must), and superb tiger fishing.

The park is open April-November but the best time for wildlife viewing is June-September. Anglers will find the best fishing in September and October.

Whilst the park remains relatively underdeveloped, the private lodges nestled on the great Zambezi’s banks are on a par with (and some perhaps even better than) the accommodations in South Luangwa.
